Summer Flounder: These flat fish are masters of camouflage, blending in perfectly with the sandy bottom. But don't let their sneaky nature fool you – they put up a great fight when hooked. Summer flounder, also known as fluke, are most active in the warmer months and can grow up to several pounds. Anglers love targeting these tasty fish for their delicate, white meat and the challenge of enticing them to bite.
Sea Trout: Also called speckled trout, these fish are a favorite among Tybee Island anglers. They're known for their spotted pattern and their willingness to hit a variety of baits and lures. Sea trout are most active in the cooler months, but can be caught year-round in the right spots. They're not just fun to catch – they're also excellent eating, with a mild, sweet flavor that's hard to beat.
Redfish: These copper-colored bruisers are the heavyweight champs of inshore fishing. Redfish, also known as red drum, can grow to over 40 inches and put up an incredible fight. They're often found tailing in shallow water, making for some heart-pounding sight fishing opportunities. Redfish are active year-round but really turn on in the fall. Anglers love targeting them for their powerful runs and their status as one of the best-tasting fish in the sea.

The weather looked questionable on the morning of our charter, but Captain Trey stayed in close contact leading up to the trip to discuss all our options. Despite the conditions, we decided to head out with my wife and 5-year-old daughter. Unfortunately, the wind and rain returned, making things uncomfortable on the water. Without hesitation, Captain Trey graciously took us back to the dock to drop them off, ensuring their comfort, and offered to continue the charter with just me. Even in tough conditions, Captain Trey’s expertise shined as he put us on fish, and soon we were landing keeper-sized trout and redfish. Though he offered to clean the catch, I chose to release them for someone else to enjoy down the line—hopefully when they’ve grown even bigger. It was an incredible experience, and I can’t thank Captain Trey enough for his hospitality and care for my family. I highly recommend him and will definitely book with him again on our next visit!

Summer flounder are a unique catch off Tybee Island. These flatfish are masters of camouflage, changing color to blend with the seafloor. Most we catch are 15-20 inches, but they can grow to 26 pounds and live up to 20 years. You'll find flounder near the bottom in both inshore and offshore waters. They're ambush predators, using their camo to surprise prey. Fall is prime time, especially September through November, but you can catch them year-round. Anglers love flounder for their fight and their excellent taste. To hook one, use live bait like minnows or mullet, or try sea worms and clams. Here's a local trick: when using baitfish, hook smaller ones through the eye and larger ones through the lips. And don't forget a sturdy line – these flatties can put up quite a battle!
Sea trout, or speckled trout, are a blast to catch around Tybee. These silvery, spotted fish typically run 14-24 inches and 1-5 pounds, though some monsters pushing 40 pounds have been caught. You'll find them in grass flats and shallow waters, especially at night. These guys are great fighters and even better eating – their mild, flaky white meat is a local favorite. Spring and fall are peak seasons, but you can catch trout year-round here. In winter, they school up in deeper waters up to 160 feet. Sea trout love to chase bait, so artificial lures work great. Try jerk baits, topwater plugs, or plastic shrimp. Here's a pro tip: troll slowly along grass edges at night for some of the best action. Just be careful not to overcook them – their soft meat can get mushy fast!
Redfish, also called Red Drum, are a favorite around Tybee Island. You'll find these copper-colored beauties in shallow waters, often just 1-4 feet deep. They love hanging out near oyster beds, grass flats, and around old structures. Most redfish we catch are 20-30 inches, but the big boys can hit 40+ inches and 50 pounds. They put up a great fight and taste delicious too. Fall is prime time for reds, but you can catch 'em year-round. Look for their signature tail spot – it helps fool predators. These fish are homebodies, sticking close to where they were born. To land a nice one, try working a topwater lure or jig along the shallows. My local tip: on a falling tide, focus on creek mouths where redfish ambush bait getting pulled out. Nothing beats the excitement of seeing a red crush your lure right on the surface!
